About Us.
Cabuya Library is a dream 15+ years in the making. Back in 2011 a young Canadian, Kylie Agarand, travelled to Cabuya and spent sometime volunteering in the community. She fell in love with Costa Rica and always dreamed of giving back but she was so young and didn't know where to start.

Now she's back, with her two young daughters and a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, ready to bring her love of reading and education to the community!

Mission Statement
Our mission is to support literacy, learning, and community connection by providing an inclusive, safe, and welcoming library space with accessible programs, resources, and opportunities for people of all ages.
We believe learning should be joyful, safe, and rooted in respect, curiosity, and shared humanity.
Values
Literacy as a Foundation
We believe literacy is essential to personal empowerment, participation in community life, and long-term opportunity. We support reading, writing, language learning, and comprehension at all ages and skill levels.
Inclusive Learning for Everyone
Our library is for everyone - people of all ages, genders, ethnicity, religion, skin tone, sexuality, income level, education level, and nationality. We intentionally create programming that is welcoming, flexible, and free from judgement. Discrimination will not be tolerated.
Safety & Sober Community Spaces
We are committed to providing a sober, safe, and respectful gathering space where people can learn, play, and connect without pressure or exclusion. Safety includes emotional safety, clear boundaries, and mutual respect.
Values
2SLGBTQIA+ Affirmation & Belonging
We actively affirm and include 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals and families. Representation, respect, and belonging are not optional values - they are essential to building a healthy, connected community.
Access to Resources
We believe access should not depend on income or circumstance. The library works to provide resources that may otherwise be unavailable, including books, educational materials, games, computers, printers, and other shared tools for learning and creativity.
Learning Through Joy & Play
Learning is most powerful when it is engaging and fun. Through storytime, board games, book clubs, language lessons, and creative activities, we support curiosity, social connection, and learning that feels meaningful rather than forced.
Values
Community Knowledge & Shared Skills
Knowledge exists within the community. We value people who are willing to share skills, experiences, and expertise - whether through teaching, volunteering, storytelling, or mentoring.
Respect, Care, & Accountability
We treat each other with dignity and care. Out programs are built on consent, kindness, and responsibility - to one another and to the shared space we hold.
